According to Hindu mythologies and myths, Chardham signifies the journey to the moksha and a divine life after that. Chardham can be split into Char that means four and dham meaning destinations. The Chardham is the name given to the four most sacred and holy pilgrimages of India. Situated amidst the beautiful natural surroundings of the majestic Himalayas in Uttarakhand Chardham comprises, Gangotri, Yamunotri, Badrinath and Kedarnath - the most sacred pilgrimage sites of Hinduism. Apart from religious beliefs, these Dham are majestic and very much mirror to the enriched Indian culture, ethos and traditions. Two holy and divine rivers Ganga and Yamuna add to the entire ambience. The Four Dham have been described in scriptures as the sacred places where the visitors could earn the virtues of all the pilgrimages put together. These four shrines receive holy water from the four most scared rivers of India - Yamuna (in Yamunotri ), Bhagirathi (in Gangotri ), Mandakini (in Kedarnath ) and Alaknanda (in Badrinath ).For centuries, saints and pilgrims, in their search for the divine, have walked these mystical vales known in ancient Hindu scriptures as 'Kedarkhand'. The Chardham must be visited from left to right -beginning with Yamunotri, going on to Gangotri, Kedarnath and culminating the journey at Badrinath. Yamunotri, the starting place of the Yamuna River and the place of the goddess Yamuna, is also considered to be one of the four sites in India's Chardham pilgrimage. The temple is an idol of Goddess Yamuna carved in black stone that is mainly worshipped. A hot water pool at Yamunotri is used for the preparation of Prasad, normally rice and potatoes, cooked by dipping them in the hot water, tied in cloth bags. The shrine can also be visited via Mussoorie and Barkot. Gangotri, the pleasing pilgrimage in the lap of the Himalayas is the most blessed destination where Ganga, the river of life, feels the ground for the first time. According to an old legend, Lord Shiva rewarded King Bhagirath after his penance and Ganga came down to earth. This is why Ganga is also called by the name of Bhagirathi. The aarti ceremony at the Gangotri is especially impressive, as is the temple, a stately affair that sits on the banks of the rushing Ganga (Ganges River). Adventurous pilgrims can make an overnight 17 km trek to Gaumukh, the actual current source of the Ganga. Kedarnath is the seat of Lord Shiva. It is one of the twelve "Jyotirlingas" of Lord Shiva. Lying at an altitude of 3584 m at the head of river Mandakini, the shrine of Kedarnath is amongst the holiest pilgrimage for the Hindus. The origin of the revered temple can be found in the great epic Mahabharat. The temple is at an altitude of 3,581 mt it is a 14-km trek from Gaurikund. Kedar is another name of Lord Shiva, the protector and the destroyer. Shiva is considered the embodiment of all passions-love, hatred, fear, death and mysticism which are expressed through his various forms. Badrinath is the most important of the four sites in India’s Chardham. Badrinath the place of the God Vishnu in his aspect of Badrinarayan, is the main of the four Dhams in India's Chardham pilgrimage. It is located in the Garhwal hills, on the banks of the Alaknanda River. Badrinath was established as a major pilgrimage site by Adi Shankara in the ninth century. According to legend Shankara discovered a black stone image of Lord Badrinarayan made of Saligram stone in the Alaknanda River. He originally enshrined it in a cave near the Tapt Kund hot springs. In the sixteenth century, the King of Garhwal moved the murti to the present temple. The Chardham Yatra is organized in every year, these holy places are opened for tourists from the period of May to October and the rest of the year they remain unreachable due to chunk of ice they lie covered with.
