With the speed in the advancement of technology, consumers find themselves torn between succumbing to the ease of connectivity and running back to simpler times. On the one hand, it is easier to connect with other people in distant corners of the world. On the other, it has become easier for identity thieves to steal your information. Protecting yourself against ID theft can seem like a pretty daunting task in this increasingly online world. Identity theft problems happen every day to people from all walks of life. The internet has brought about more opportunities for identity thieves to accomplish their goals a lot faster. One of the areas they’re been successful at for years is credit card fraud. These days, it is mandatory for consumers to understand that it’s important to detect and defend themselves against identity theft. To do this, they should acquire proper ID theft prevention techniques. Reasons Why Identity Theft Remains a Problem Many factors lead to the worsening of identity theft. Admittedly, this has been a problem for decades and yet nothing has been done to eliminate it. Identity theft has continued to adapt to the changes in technology. The following are some possible factors that contribute to the resilience of identity theft: - Developing technology
While it’s true that technology does wonders to better our lives, identity thieves have also exploited it for their gain. They have used technology and turned it against consumers by making it a vehicle of identity theft. This equips them with more knowledge and more means to steal valuable information. Some of these new methods are tampered ATMs, data breaches and phishing scams. - Rise of social media
You may not be aware of it but identity thieves can get your information from your social media accounts. They could steal your address, mother’s maiden name or birthday just by looking at your wall posts. You should change your privacy settings so that these thieves won’t be able to use your information in their ID theft plots. - Unsupervised locations of sale
ID theft can happen in establishments that have an unsecured point of sale such as credit card swipe slots in gas stations. They use devices such as skimmers to copy the info off your card. You won’t be able to tell which card slot has been tampered with because the culprit usually has the key to these machines and could very well be an insider. - Malware proliferation
These are viruses that can go into your bank’s computer systems. Malware grants the thieves access to sensitive consumer information like debit and credit card accounts. - Illegal immigrant problem
There are illegal immigrants that search for greener pastures in this country. They are the perfect targets for identity thieves to cash in on their need for new lives under new identities. To fill the necessity, they procure identities of unsuspecting residents who either have established lives already or are too young to check if their information has been tampered with. Identity theft is definitely an ongoing source of headache for both consumers and authorities. There has to be something done about it so that everyone could sleep soundly at night knowing that their identity is safe.
