Gateway of India is a major tourist spot and gathering destination for photographers, giant balloon sellers, and locals. Elephanta festivals of music and dance are now shifted to Gateway, following its capacity. It can host 2000 to 2500 people. There are easy accesses to launches and cruises as the place is always crowded. Gateway of India, located on the Apollo Bunder Area of South Mumbai. It is the most famous monument and starting point for most of the tourists. It was built during British Raj. It was built as an arch of triumph, in memory of visit by King George V and Queen Mary. The structure is a made of yellow basalt a concrete of 26 meters high. It lies at the end of Chhatrapati Shivaji Marg at the edge of Harbour of Mumbai, which was a crude jetty, but later used as a land mark for British people and prominent people. This was the first view that people see while going by boat to Mumbai. It is also called Taj Mahal of Mumbai. It is also commercial capital. The construction of monument was over only in 1914, it was the ceremonial entrance for the Viceroys and Governors of Bombay. It was indeed the entry and access to India. It was designed by George Wittet an architect. It is a combination of Muslim, Hindu style, the arch has Muslim style, while decoration has Hindu style. It is also called as Indo Sarcenic architecture. The stone for it was bought from Gwalior. On each side of arch, there are large halls affording 600 people in it. The cost of construction was 21 Lakh. The significance of this monument is mainly the landing of Viceroys and Governor occurs here. Gateway is really a symbol of power and majesty. Next to this is Taj Mahal Palace and tower hotel for the great visitors to spend and stay. There are five jetties here, first jetty purely to Atomic Research centre. Second and third is for commercial operation. Fourth is closed and fifth on exclusively to Royal Bombay yacht club. After 200 Mumbai attack all these jetties were closed and two new jetties were open. Then the second and third were directed to Elephanta caves, Alibaug and Mandwa. One will have great fun visiting here; it is also good experience to visit with family and friends. Numerous hotel and accommodation are available here. To reach here there are air, rail, sea and road transport. Shivaji Mumbai Chhatrapati airport is easily accessible airport. There are many cruises connecting Singapore, Dubai. Number of national highways is there with routine buses and travelling by car is also smooth. Trains are there which connect Mumbai to all parts of India.
