Darjeeling, a hub for holiday makers especially for honeymooners, is situated in the state of West Bengal. The city of Darjeeling attracts tourists from all over the world by its beautiful snow-capped mountains and the tea estates. Darjeeling toy train journey is a fantastic and thrilling tour with eye-catching view on either side. The official name of the Darjeeling Toy Train is the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway acquired UNESCO’s approval to include in its World Heritage site in 1999. Darjeeling Himalayan Railway is one of the few mountain railways which are still operational in the country. Diesel trains run to and from New Jalpaiguri and steam engines run to and from Kurseong. Today, the steam engines have been replaced by diesel electric or electric traction. Tickets are available at Hill Cart Road Station in Darjeeling.The Darjeeling Toy Train is one of the most popular narrow gauge trains which are of 2 ft in breadth. The Darjeeling Toy Train made its first journey in September 1881. A journey in the toy train, criss-crosses the motor road and passes through bazaars, leaving an unforgettable memory to the tourist. The journey takes around eight hours to Darjeeling from New Jalpaiguri. The journey covers blue mountain ranges, tea gardens and the forests of Teak and Sal. The to and fro journey fare for a person for this joy train is Rs. 200/-. It has a capacity of 30 persons.Besides entertainment to the visitors of all ages, the toy train on the Darjeeling Himalayan section showcasesthe modern engineering skills. This 83 km long section connecting the city of Darjeeling with the railhead at Siliguri offers picturesque scenery along its way. The train passes through small forests of maple, chestnut, pear, cherry, Cryptomeria and cardamom plants providing a panoramic view of the mountain valley. The climb of the train is through reverse and loops. Apart from reverse and loops, the section has 5 major, 498 minor bridges and 177 unmanned level crossings. There are 14 stations including New Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling with an average inter distance of 6 to 7 km. Ghum station is the second highest railway station (7,407 ft) in the world to be reached by steam engine. Trekking, water rafting, nature walking are some adventurous activities in the city of Darjeeling. The closest airport is in Siliguriwhich is at a distance of about 40 km. The nearest international airport is in Guwahati which is 384 km away. The railway station near to Darjeeling is Jalpaiguri. The city of Darjeeling is well connected to the other cities by road.
