This region was hit by a huge landslide or avalanche in 1823 and the winding lake was a result of this incident. Thus the whole area came to be known as Avalanche and the lake as Avalanche Lake. There is a dam on the lake which is said to be funded by Canada at the time of British rule. Hence it is till date known as Canada Dam. Avalanche is a lakeside area near the famous hill station of Ooty in south India. This stunning place is located in the Nilgiris district in the state of Tamil Nadu and is hardly 26 kilometres away from Ooty. Avalanche is enjoyed by nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. Surrounded by misty mountains and edged by green trees and shrubs, the calm and serene lake is like a beautiful painting come alive. Shola trees grow in abundance here and also flowering plants like magnolias, orchids and rhododendrons. The lakeside is home to a variety of birds and so bird watchers can have a good time here. The lake is ideal for trout fishing as trout fishes breeds in unpolluted water. There is even a trout hatchery near the lake which rents out fishing rods and nets. Rafting across the lake is a trendy activity here. Trekking around the nearby hills is another option. The view of the valley and lake is spectacular from the heights. One can hike to Kolaribetta or drive up to Upper Bhavani to Mukurthi National Park which homes Nilgiri langurs, Nilgiri tahr, elephants, sambars, wolves, Nilgiri martens, civet cats and other wild animals. But for any of these activities, prior permission from the wildlife and forest department is absolutely necessary as the whole area is a reserved forest. One can freely enjoy the Avalanche Lake up to the forest check post at the Orchidarium and Trout Fishery. It is only to go beyond this post that permission is necessary. There are plenty of lovely spots before the check post as well. The region is comparatively untouched by commercialization and urbanisation. So there is hardly any option of accommodation. There is only a guest house maintained by the forest department where visitors can stay. Alternatively tourists can pitch up tents or camps by the lakeside. No food is available in Avalanche so it is advisable to have food from Emerald or Ooty. Being an eco sensitive region, plastics are banned here and so one cannot carry food to Avalanche. Staying in Ooty and going for a one day excursion to Avalanche would be the best option. Ooty is the major bus and railway station connecting Avalanche to major towns like Chennai, Bangalore and Mysore.
