Konark is famous for annual Konark dance festival. It is held every December. This dance is devoted to classical Indian dance of Odisha called Odissi. The word Konark is got from Sanskrit word Kona meaning angle and Arka meaning sun. The Temple here is dedicated to Lord Surya. Konark is a small town in Puri district. It is in the state of Orissa, India. It lies in the Bay of Bengal coast. It is only at 65 km from Bhubaneswar. It is famous for a world heritage site, the Sun Temple. It is made with black granite during the time of Narasimhadeva-1 of Ganga dynasty after his victory with Mughals in 13th century AD. There are a collection of sculptures and Sun temple museum is with archaeological survey of India. The place is also known for beaches. Konark Temple is designed as a gigantic chariot of Sun God, with twelve pairs of ornamental wheels pled by seven horses. Some wheels are 3 meter wide. The Temple belongs to Kalingan school of Indian Temple architecture. The alignment is along East-West direction. Konark and Puri are very nearby place, it is only 35 km in between them. There are a number of tourist places here. Beaches here are really a relaxing and refreshing place. Konark Sun Temple, Jagannath Temple, Gundicha Mandir, Balighai beach, Atharnala Bridge, Chilka Lake (Asia’s largest fresh water lake) are major must visited places here. Puri is one of the four Dhams of Hinduism, and hallowed seat of Lord Jagannath. Thousands of visitors and pilgrims come here. There are number of sights and beautiful places surrounding Konark, they are Chandrabhaga, Ramachandi, Bhagabati, Kuruma, Puri, Baleswar, Gopalpur, and Kenduli. They all worth visiting while visiting Konark. Traditional handlooms and handicrafts here are famous. Sea shell works, and metal works worth buying. Orissian dish from local restaurants are also famous. As it is close to sea, they have a coastal climate. During summers the climate is very hot, the minimum temperature is 27 degree. October to march is the best time to visit here. Konark is accessible from all parts of world with all means of transports. The airport nearest to Konark is Bhubaneswar; it is at 60 km away from there. Indian airlines, Jet airways, are there to Kolkata, Chennai, Delhi and Mumbai. Taxi stand buses are available from there. Puri is one of the major railway stations among south eastern railway. Puri is connected rest of the places of Orissa by rail. As it is a tourist destination, buses operate from all parts. Government and tourist buses are available here. Tour packages are also there. Cars and coaches can also be hired to see all the places there. Hotels with good facilities are also available.
