Jama Masjid in Delhi has three entrances, two minarets and four towers. It is a great piece of architecture constructed on a 10 m platform from the surface level and spreads across 1200 sq m in area. Jama Masjid is located in Delhi and is one of the biggest and ancient mosques in India. It is one of the well-known iconic structures of the capital city. The mosque was built in 1656 AD by the great Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan who has become famous by building Taj Mahal as a tribute to his wife Mumtaz Mahal. A majestic and wonderful example of the Mughal architecture, the Jama Masjid has a large spacious courtyard that can hold about twenty five thousand people at a time. The mosque is placed near Red Fort at the east and is located at the starting of the busy lanes of Chandni Chowk or Old Delhi. The Masjid-i-Jahan Numa, as it is called in Urdu, refers to the mosque that instructs a view of the whole world. It took about a time of six years and around 5000 workers to finish this outstanding construction. The open arched entrances of Masjid cover the west facing mosques from three sides. Three domes alternately lined in white and black marble make the roof of 80 m long and 27 m wide mosque. The domes are lined on both sides by two large 41 m high minarets with 130 steps. There are red sandstone and white marble lines seen on these minarets. Four same looking minarets are there to decorate the backside of the mosque too. When you climb 39 stairs on the northern side or 33 stairs on the southern end, it will lead into the courtyard. The major gate or the majestic entrance is situated on the eastern front with a staircase of 35 steps. These stairs are built of red sandstone, the main material that was used in the olden times for construction. The royal entrance sited on the eastern side generally remains closed on most of the days. Like the name says, this doorway was chiefly used by the emperors and members of the royal families. Ancient remnants of Prophet Muhammad are ingrained in a marble slab and exhibited on a high platform at the gate in north of the mosque. Placing it on this point offers a fine view for all around. These objects include well known holy emblazoned on deerskin, the prophet's sandals, his red beard-hair, his sandals and footprints. Shops and food stalls were put on these steps in the past. A poultry market place is also found here at the evening. The eastern gate is in short full of activities making the place lively. For More Info: Jama Masjid Delhi and Places to Visit in New Delhi
