Though there are many such Sangams, the one at Allahabad, where the mighty rivers, Ganga and Yamuna joins with the mythical Saraswathi, is considered to be the holiest of the lot. Its importance is such that from time immemorial people from far and wide come here to wash off their sins and attain salvation. The Sangam site of Allahabad is also the site for historic Kumbh Mela held every 12 years. It is believed that even the gods come in human form to take a dip at the Sangam during Kumbhamela to get rid of their sins. Moreover, it is also considered to be auspicious to immerse the ashes of one after death. As such, the ashes of many leaders like Mahatma Gandhi were immersed here in Allahabad. India is a land of holy sites and rivers. The Hindu religion is replete with places of religious importance. As per the tradition, Triveni Sangam is one such sacred site for all believers of the religion. It is the "confluence" of three rivers (tirveni – three rivers). Sangam is a Sanskrit word that means confluence. A dip in the Sangam waters is said to wash away one's sins and free one from the cycle of rebirth forever. As one approach the Sangam site, it is interesting to note that the rivers can be identified by their colours. Their characteristics are clearly visible - Yamuna is deep but calm and dark in colour, but Ganga is shallow, albeit forceful and clear. The Saraswati is hidden, but the faithful believe that she is present underground. This difference in character of the rivers is more clearly seen during the monsoons, when they are in full flow. However, taking a dip at the confluence is difficult at those times. It is said that while Ganga is a mere 4 feet deep, Yamuna is more than 40 feet deep at the point of their meeting. From there on, both rivers merges into one and the Ganga continues on to join the sea at the Bay of Bengal. Mythological accounts tell us that Triveni Sangam at Allahabad is the place where drops of Nectar of immortality (amrutha in Sanskrit) fell from the pitcher, from the hands of the Gods. Hence, the belief - a bath in the Sangam will wash away all one's sins and clear the way to salvation. Devotees from all over come here during the Kumbh Mela, which is touted as the largest religious congregation in the world. Millions and millions of people come from various parts of the globe to Sangam at Allahabad to be a part of this wonderful gathering. It is the best place to get a glimpse of the ancient Indian culture. For More Info: Sangam Allahabad and Places to Visit in Allahabad
