Virtual Private Server is used for many different purposes by numerous users so we have to think about security of the servers also. As we are using some software for securing our personal computer, so here for Windows VPS and Linux VPS we have to think more about security before someone brakes out our server. As utilization of the website is increasing day by day we have to secure our server otherwise it can be hacked by hacker. There are so many points and study we have to follow for increasing security of our server; out of this here we would like to discuss the most important security points for Windows VPS and Linux VPS: 1) Security of SSH: You have to take some actions to increase security of SSH Service. If anyone can be broke into the SSH then he/she can access most of the resources available on the Server side. So you have to configure security of SSH. 2) Antivirus Software: you need to use license based antivirus software to protect windows vps and Linux VPS from latest available threats on the internet. And do not forget to update antivirus software daily or weekly basis so that your server can be more secure from the new threats. 3) Permission: be careful while assigning any permission to any folders or website on your Windows VPS or linux vps. For that you need to understand the rights management. You have give only rights which are required by the folder, don’t give execute permission to everyone. If by mistake you assign the all permission then that user can manage all the permissions. You have to assign rights to one folder only in your Windows VPS or Linux VPS. 4) Updating of Server: You have to update regularly your server from the authorized website to get latest security updates from the owner of the websites. For example Microsoft provides automatic update of server Windows VPS, then you should keep it as it is. So your server can be updated from the server automatically with latest patches available from the owner of the server. The same can be carried out on Linux VPS. 5) Setup Firewall: You need to on firewall of your server to block all other ports which are not used by your server. Otherwise anyone can connect with unused port and can get access to your server. In journal you are using mail server then you need to allow SMTP and POP3 port as configures on your Windows VPS or Linux VPS. If you are file sharing serve then you need to allow only FTP or SFTP port. If you are using any other server then allow only port which is used by the server application. 6) Use of Specific Port: If you would like to host some special website or portal on your Windows VPS or Linux VPS then you have to specify the different port to your web portal for security reasons. So that only limited persons who are having that port information can access your website on special port, remaining users will get error message that website is not working on Windows VPS or Linux VPS.
