Fatehpur Sikri is a beautiful ghost city in Agra. It was built in 16th century. Akbar the great found the site. He did not have any heir. He went to a saint Shaikh Salim Chishti , he blessed Akbar, later Akbar got three sons born. So he built a monument in Sikri, which he named as Fatehpur Sikri meaning city of victory. The monument has mughal architecture. It is a culmination of Muslim and Hindu architecture. It was built in 1569 -85. The mosque here is said to be a copy of Mecca. There are many popular spaces that must be viewed by the people, they are Diwan-i-Khas, it is the royal chamber of Akbar. Persian style is used for designing and decorated with fine sculpture and stones. There are 4 kiosks, located in the middle. Panch Mahal is most famous in Fatehpur Sikri; it is a five storeyed building, meant to be shelter of Royal ladies and mistress. Tomb of Salim Chishti, it is the tomb of Sufi and there decoration is beautiful, hundreds of visitors visit here. Buland Darwaza, it is also an important monument in place. The gateway itself was 54 metres. It is the largest gateway in the world. Diwan e-alam, Turkish Sulthana and rsquos house, treasury, Dhaulat-khana-l – Khas, ibadat Khana, Mariamu Zamani, Hujra- Tanup Talao, Naubat Khana, Pachisi court, Birbal’s house, Palace of jodha bai, Sunehra Makan, Jama Masjid and Nangina masjid are famous other places here. Thay are regarded as most important buildings among list of world heritage buildings forwarded by UNESCO. Building materials used are locally quarried red sandstone, known as Sikri sandstone. It is accessed through gates along five miles namely, Delhi gate, birbal’s gate, Lal gate, Agra gate, Gwalior gate, Chor gate, Tehra gate, Ajmere gate and Chandanpal gate It is open on all days, for foreigner entrance fees are Rs. 490, for Indians Rs. 50. It is open on all days. It has become one of the major tourist spot in Agra. It is one of the fifteen block headquarters of Agra. It has 52 gram panchayaths under it. It is about 39 km from Agra, so nearest airport is Agra airport, also known as Kheira Airport. The nearest railway station is Fatehpur Sikri railway station which is only one km from here. It is connected to Agra and nearby centre. Fatehpur is also connected to other places by well developed roads; there are regular bus services of UPSRTS, taxis and tourist buses always available. It is only 78 km to Kanpur, 135 km to Lucknow, 570 km to Jaipur, and 510 km to Delhi from Fatehpur. Normally people go for a day trip to Fatehpur staying in Agra.
