Kolkata remained the capital of India during British rule till 1911. The twin cities of Kolkata and Howrah were separated by the River Hooghly which eventually resulted in the construction of the Rabindra Setu, or, Howrah Bridge. In the year 1906 the railway station at Howrah was set up and the bridge was served as the logistic link with the country's one of the oldest metropolis, Kolkata. Opened to the public in 1943 Howrah Bridge is officially called as Rabindra Setu, named after the Nobel laureate and renowned Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore. It is estimated that approximately 150,000 vehicles and 4,000,000 pedestrians use the bridge each day. It's one of the longest bridges of its type in the world. It is also said that Howrah Bridge is the busiest bridge in the world. One must walk to experience the sheer volume of traffic that it carries. Traffic here includes cars, buses, bicycles, bullock cars and innumerable people bearing loads of heavy wares on their head. There are many interesting places worth visiting around this bridge. Some of the include Raj Bhavan, Writers Building, The Howrah Railway Station, Belur Math and Botanical Gardens. Raj Bhavan, the official residence of the Governor of West Bengal, is the finest example of Georgian architecture in India. During British rule it was used as the residence by the British Governors. Writers Building built in the year 1780, is a major landmark in Kolkata. It is famous for its Corinthian facade. It was the residence for the British East India Company's clerical and administrative staff and currently it houses the main state secretariat. The Howrah Railway Station was opened in 1906. It is one of the largest railway stations in the world connecting to all major Indian cities and towns. It is also an important terminus for the suburban railway services of the Eastern and the South Eastern Railway. Belur Math is a well known tourist spot and is located on the west bank of the river Hooghly 6 km from Howrah Bridge. It is the headquarters of the famous Ramakrishna Math and Mission. Swami Vivekananda is the founder who set this Math up in 1899. It is a holy pilgrimage for multitudes of devotees, thronging from various corners of the globe. There are also other things such as an art college, an industrial school and charitable dispensary associated with the Math. There is an extensive Botanical Garden, along with the Western bank of the Hooghly river, stretches 1 km along the river and occupy 109 hectares. The gardens were originally founded in 1786 and administered by Colonel Kyd. It was from these gardens that the tea now grown in Assam and Darjeeling, were first developed.
