Sukhna Lake in Chandigarh is an artificial lake at the foothills of the Himalayas, the Shivalik hills. It is one of the most picturesque lakes in the country. Created in 1958 it is an inseparable part of the city with a depth of 18 feet spread across 3 sq km. The name Sukhna literally means wish-fulfilled. At the entrance it displays Edict of the Lake. “The founders of Chandigarh have offered this Chandigarh Lake and dam to the citizens of the new city so that they may escape the humdrum of the city life and enjoy the beauty of nature in peace and silence.” In 1958 this artificial lake was constructed by preventing the flow of the Sukhna Choe stream, which is a seasonal stream that comes down from the Shivalik Hills. It’s a fact that the city planners were deeply attached to the lake and this even made them to immerse Pierre Jeanerette’s ashes in the lake in 1970 as per his wishes by his niece. You will find many serious walkers around this place, it’s an excellent place for families to enjoy evening strolls and nature lovers too join the scene with children on roller skates. For photographers and painters this lake is a boon as they can capture the scenic beauty of the setting sun, or the heavily clouded monsoon sky, or the early morning mist in winter set amidst the tranquility of the lake. There is a membership-based Lake Club at Sukhna. There are lawns, gym, indoor games, swimming pool and tennis courts with both synthetic and grass courts in here. Boating, rowing, sculling, sailing, kayaking and water skiing can be enjoyed throughout the year. It has the finest ever channel for rowing and yachting which makes it the venue of Asiatic level Rowing Championships. It is a safe haven for exotic migrant birds thus makes it a favorite location for bird watchers. Chandigarh is well connected by rail to many cities in Punjab, Haryana and also to Delhi. One can find frequent trains running between Delhi and Chandigarh. Also there are connection trains to Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore and Trivandrum from Chandigarh. There are daily trains from Chandigarh to Lucknow. Chandigarh domestic airport is 8 km away from city center. You can hire a cab for about Rs 100 to get there. Most of the air services provide daily flights to Delhi from Chandigarh. International travelers have to get connection through Delhi Airport There are state owned buses connecting Chandigarh to all nearest cities in Punjab and Haryana. Deluxe Volvo buses and semi deluxe buses are available from Shimla, Manali, New Delhi and Dehradun. The normal charge for Deluxe buses is usually Rs 3 to 4 per kilometer.
