Richard Land got sloppy and it cost him his weekend radio program. The executive committee of the trustees of the Southern BaptistEthics & Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC), of which Land ispresident, pulled the plug on Richard Land Live! last week, blasting him for plagiarism and for raciallyinsensitive remarks involving the Trayvon Martin case. But it s not clear that Land went much beyond standard practicefor talk radio. Apparently the executive committee, with SouthernBaptists in the midst of a racial reconciliation campaign, decidedto focus on damage control rather than try to weather thecontroversy. An investigation by the executive committee of the trustees of theERLC led to the delivering last Friday of two stinging rebukes toLand and the cancellation his radio program, noting that itscontent and purpose are not congruent with the mission of theERLC. The last broadcast with Land as host was Saturday. The ERLCis deciding whether to continue with another weekend program. Land has a long and commendable record of working for racialreconciliation, which is why comments on a racially charged casethat were unremarkable in other publications even mild by thestandards of talk radio generated a modest firestorm when Landsaid them. Defending remarks that later turned out to be not hisown made it even worse. He left himself open to charges, justifiedor not, of hypocrisy on two counts. But Tom Tradup, the vice president of news and talk programming atthe Salem Radio Network, the radio syndicator that carried Land sprogram, had another perspective. I found this to be a case where theologians approach talk radiofrom a different perspective than those in the industry, he said, adding that comments considered hurtful by some are just part of a free and open exchange of ideas on talk radio. Nor does Tradup speaking for himself and not for Salem thinkLand s failure to cite the sources of his comments on air quitequalifies as plagiarism. The fact that all the sources were listedon the program s blog makes it clear Land had no intent todeceive. Further, while talk radio hosts usually mention the sourceof a commentary before reading portions on air, they deliver aseamless blend of others commentary and their own opinionsthat s intended to be provocative and generate calls. According toTradup, listeners understand this: As long as we re having fulldisclosure in the process, I sleep well at night. COMPLETE STORY Read Les Sillars's complete Web Extra report.
