Most of the lens converges light to a single point. But a cylindrical lens has special features. Instead of focusing the beam of light to a beam it focuses in a line form. The cylindrical part of the lens is the part of a cylinder which emits light in line form parallel to the intersection of the surface of the lens. There is a great application of the cylindrical lens. They are used in solar water heating installations. The cylindrical lenses are used in semiconductor devises also. In semiconductor devices the cylindrical lens are used to correct the output from diode lasers, to produce a round beam from the diode’s elliptical output.
