The new Mizuno MP-63 irons have a diamond shape in the cavity of these players’ irons. That diamond shape distributes the weight in the head behind the ball just about perfectly along with offering just the right amount of forgiveness. At first glance these are outstanding looking clubs. The chromed face and back contrasted by the satin cavity look great. They are pure Mizuno. There is minimal stampings and markings for a true player’s club. Upon further inspection their sole grind is very well done. There is a blunted leading edge and a beveled trailing edge meaning less digging and when you do, easy exit from the turf. In the crowded MP line, the 63s occupy the slot between last year's MP-68 (Mizuno's current "tour blade") and the Mizuno MP-58 irons(which promises a little higher launch and slightly more forgiving option). The other new MP iron, the Mizuno MP-53 Irons provides the most help in the MP line, with even higher launch and more forgiveness. With four current MP models, Mizuno offers more options for better players than most other manufacturers. I had played the MP-68 irons all season and got the MP-63s in near the end. Maybe I was expecting too much or thinking that they were going to be drastically different, but they were not. They had the same great feel; I seem to hit them on about the same trajectory as the MP-68s and really didn’t notice anything that different. Until I got done with my rounds and added up my greens hit in regulation and walked through my round again in my head, having shot one of best scores of the season and trying to figure out why. Then it hit me, these irons are just enough more forgiving that I didn’t miss greens like I had from time to time with my MP-68s. The overall shape is a little boxier than the MP-68s and they seem to have a taller toe, but are still very pleasant to look down at. Ball flight is lower with the 63s than with most Mizuno MP-64 Irons in the MP line, but I had no problem getting the ball up over trees when I needed. Put a good swing on the ball and these irons do exactly what you tell them to do. Draws and cuts are equally easy to pull off. Hit side by side with my current irons (AP2s), the MP-63s played a few yards longer through the set with a similar ball flight. With everything that the the MP-63 Irons offer, they should definitely ease the pain. They play well and look good. Distance, accuracy, and trajectory… the 63s are strong performers across the board.
