Luxury car and race car transportation by air is giving airlines like Delta in the United States and Lufthansa in Germany a real boost, according to Bloomberg News. In a story circulated in May 2013 the new agency said: ‘Delta flies about 100 cars a year, putting it in the vanguard of a new front in U.S. airlines’ quest to widen profit margins with premium services for wealthy fliers.’ Helane Becker, an analyst at Cowen Securities LLC in New York, said: “The higher the value of the goods you’re shipping, the higher the margin, and a lot of these cars are almost irreplaceable,” according to Bloomberg. And in Europe too, luxury and race car transportation by air is giving airlines a much needed shot in the arm. For example Lufthansa, based in Germany, said that it transports an incredible 1,400 cars a year by air, Bloomberg said. The news means that traditional passenger airlines are beginning to compete with the big logistics companies like DHL, which is responsible for Formula One race car transportation. Straight Eight Logistics in the United Kingdom is a firm that specialises in luxury and race car transportation. As such, it is well accustomed to acting as agent for high value vehicle owners and suppliers of air freight services. Simon Rosier from Straight Logistics said: “It is extremely interesting to hear this report that these airlines are now competing with the likes of DHL in the luxury and race car transportation market.” “However, this new element of competition will not change the way we do business. We will simply continue to select who we believe to be the best carrier for the job from those carriers that are available.” He added.
