Indian wedding jewelry to deck up the bride

Indian wedding jewelry is being sought after the world over. Find out the various items, including the Mangalsutra, that are considered important.

Article Body Weddings are an important occasion for everyone and women in India treat this an occasion to deck themselves in bridal finery to look and feel their best as they exchange their vows with the ones they intend to spend their entire life. The wedding jewelry industry in India has grown immensely over the last century and today these jewelry items are not only sought after within the country, but also all over the world. If you want to get married the way Indians do, with all the bridal finery, here are a few items, including the Mangalsutra that should be a part of your bridal trousseau.

The Mangalsutra is that most important of all the wedding jewelry in India. This is a chain that the woman wears all through her life as long as her husband is alive. The mangalsutra, which women in the northern part of India wear, is different from the ones that their counterparts in the southern part of India wear. In the north, women prefer a chain that has two or three strings of black beads that are interwoven with stands of gold with the pendant being made of diamond. In the south, women prefer thick gold chains that have a couple of gold coins, a coral and a black bead that form the pendant. While the other jewelry items such as the bangles, necklaces, nose rings and anklets are worn at any time, women earn the privileges of wearing this piece of jewelry only after the marriage is solemnised.

The nath or the nose ring is another type of wedding jewelry worn by the brides on the most important day of their life. These are items that are available in the form of studs or as large rings or drops studded with precious stones. The ones that are used during marriages are elaborate and decorative and have strings of gold with pearls that can be extended from the nose ring and pinned to the hair. Jewelry designers have also come up with beautiful varieties of nose rings that can be used by women who do not have their nose pierced.

The bangles are also Indian wedding jewelry items that every bride has to wear on the eve of her marriage. Like the mangalsutra, bangles have to be worn by every married woman, but this is a tradition that is fast ebbing away with working women shunning it for a glamorous bracelet instead of traditional jewelry. Bangles are made using different materials ranging from glass to metal such as gold and platinum. The kamarbandh or the waist band is also an important part of wedding jewelry in certain sects of India. This is a band that is made of solid gold and sometimes has intricate designs carved on it or precious stones embedded in it. Unlike the mangalsutra, this item is not a must and is preferred only by those who can afford to pay a huge amount of money. Anklets, finger rings and maang tika are also a few items that are worn by Indian brides.
