Stainless steel is basically iron alloys made up of at least ten percent chromium compound with other alloys materials used mainly to enhance the structure and properties. These are useful because these are highly corrosion resistant in specified environment and for applications as well. As these components are made up of different chemical composition it is important to grade them according to their different chemical properties. It is essential to know specific property of each steel as each one is suitable for different purpose. Mostly steels are highly resistant to corrosion and are graded according to the amount of chloride it has. However some are non magnetic and other are attracting with their magnetic properties. In the late 90s when experiments were made to make steel more useful, the usage of chromium and carbon carrying the level at least 10% and less than 0.2% respectively give rise to the idea of classifying the steel into different grades and today these grades are become so impressive for the user and production industries to use them in right way as now around 100 grades are there of stainless steel. However there are mainly five major steel types used in the industries such as: • Steel made of chromium nickel alloys is known as Austenitic steel • With plain chromium steels is Ferric steel • With the combination of carbon and chromium is Martensitic steel • With chromium and nickel, precipitation hardening steel • And with the mixture of austenitic and ferritic, duplex steel is formed Above all steel types are combined with different metals and compounds and are graded in different series such as 200, 300, 400 and 600 series. The steels classified in 200 series are mostly non magnetic and created with the approximate mixture of 7% manganese, 17% chromium and 4% nickel with other metals. This kind of steel is little much similar to its upper grade i.e. 300 series and widely used in making kitchen utensils and knives that can retain at high temperature at cooking. These are less corrosive than 300 series but once corrosion has begun, it starts break rapidly. Like 200 series steels, 300 series are also non magnetic and around 70% total steel production comes under this series. Wide ranges of applications are there when it comes to use 300 series steel types in construction industries of planes, automobiles and trains. As it contains 8% nickel and approximately 18% chromium, it is also used in kitchen utensils. On the other hand 400 series steels are magnetic and responding well to hardening through the heat. These are commonly used in combustion burners, exhaust pipes and heat exchanger applications. Similarly 600 series are highly treated in extreme heat level and should be used in low temperatures.
