Asian cuisine is held in high regard and that's expected considering it's been honed for centuries. Rice is one of the staple diets and finds its way into most preparations. Fried rice Inexpensive and easy to prepare, fried rice can be made with veggies, meat, seafood or without additional ingredients. The idea is to use cooked rice that's about a day old. Bánh chung Bánh chung is one of Vietnam's national dishes and consumed mainly on the Vietnamese New Year. It's made of glutinous rice, pork, mung bean and black pepper. It's wrapped in bamboo strings or banana leaves. Cí fàn tuán Coming out of Shanghai in China, cí fàn tuán is a mix of fried dough and glutinous rice. Sweetened soy milk accompanies it. Considered a breakfast dish, it can nevertheless be consumed for lunch and dinner. Dosa Like cí fàn tuán, dosa is mainly a breakfast dish but can be eaten anytime of the day. A type of pancake, it's made with black gram and rice batter. The mix is fermented for several hours. The batter is then fried to wafer-thin proportions and served with an accompaniment of chutneys and pigeon peas. Idli Idli, like dosa, is another breakfast dish originating in India. It's made with lentils and steamed into rice cakes. It's served with an assortment of chutneys and sambar. Nasi goreng Originating in Indonesia, nasi goreng is a very popular dish consisting of fried rice, sweet soy sauce, condiments, chicken, prawn and eggs. It's widely considered to be the country's national dish. Katsudon Katsudon is Japanese and hugely popular. It comprises rice, eggs, spices and pork cutlets served in a bowl. It can also be served with sauce. Kheer Kheer is served as dessert. The rice is overcooked to achieve a creamy texture and mixed with milk, condensed milk and sugar.
