Ah, summertime! Time for picnics, water sports and fun family vacations. Many people travel out of town or out of the country at this time of year, and some stay until the season is over. Leaving the house for a long time is always a risk, but setting up a home security system is a good option to ensure your home is safe from burglars and trespassers in addition to massive fire damage. Though your list of things to accomplish before you take off on that well-deserved vacation may be long, shopping around for home security service in Maryland might be a wise use of time. Although setting up a security system is a good way to protect your home, there are smart thieves who can get past security systems in D.C., especially when they know that no one is around. Seeing the house “empty” will always invite burglars to get into the house, so here are some tips to protect your home from the inside and out, while you and your family are on vacation. • Have Someone Watch the House Hire a house sitter to stay in your house while on vacation. Some agencies have people for hire who can assure that the house is being watched and cleaned. If the homeowner does not wish to spend money on these agencies, he or she may ask a relative or neighbor to check the house every other day or until the homeowner is back. • Suspend all newspaper and mail while on vacation Mail and newspapers piling up would give a thief or trespasser a hint that no one is inside the house. Placing the delivery of mail and newspapers on hold is the best option, so no one would have an idea that the house is empty. • Do not change voicemail or answering machine message Changing the answering machine or voicemail greeting to say you’re out of town and won’t be back for a while is a dead giveaway for would-be burglars. It’s best to keep your standard greeting on all phones. • Keep the house “Alive” Modern technology can now link any security app to the mobile phone. The homeowner can set appliances on a timer, so that lights, stereo and television turn on and off even though the house is empty. When sounds and lights are on, it gives the impression that the homeowner is inside the house. Modern appliances also have an automatic shut down mechanism that prevents eating up too much electricity. This can lessen the chances of having an electrical fire in your absence. • Avoid hiding spare keys Most homeowners leave spare keys under the mat or pot right outside the door. This idea has become very predictable to thieves. It is best not to ever leave a spare key outside, but especially when the whole family is travelling. • Lock the garage Many people forget to lock the garage before they live on vacation, but put this on your checklist of things to check before you leave. Garage doors can be very difficult to open, so any attempt to break in this way would certainly draw attention from the neighbors. • Watch what you say on social network sites Social media is all the rage these days, but many people post every detail of their lives on social networks. It’s easy to inadvertently tell the wrong person, or the whole world, you’re going to be out of town for a while. Save any notifications for after the vacation, and then you’ll have great photos of your trip to show off. These simple suggestions can help keep your house safe. Thankfully, creating the illusion that someone is always home is easy to do in today’s technological age. Before you go off on that vacation, however, consider shopping for home security in Maryland. It might save you some aggravation upon your return, and it will definitely keep your home safe while you’re gone.
