Must visit places in Machu Picchu

Travel & Tourism
Located on the high of the Andes in Peru, Machu Picchu has become a symbol of adventure tourism across the globe. Discovered in 1911 by a group of archeologists, this place which is also known as ‘The lost city of Incas’, and has many places you should visit. A visit to Peru would not be complete if you do not travel to Machu Picchu. Its historical significance and rising popularity has also earned it place in the UNESCO’s world heritage sites. There are two main entrances to this ancient city the first being via the hike through Inca trail and the second one is by train to Aguas Calientes. Whichever way you enter, this ancient city will mesmerize you and give a great perspective on Inca history and culture. Also don’t forget that there are no vehicles allowed here so you would be pretty much visiting the site on foot so make sure to carry comfortable footwear and airy clothes. You should plan your trips to Machu Picchu in advance by finding out what you would like to see and/or do here.

The Sun Gate

If you are hiking Machu Picchu then this will be your first sight of the ruins. From this gate you will be able to see great view of valley surrounding the ruins. If you arrive here early in the morning you will be able to see the sun peak above the mountains through this gate. Hike to the sun gate is a strenuous one and takes about 1 to 1.5 hours. So be prepared and carry lot of water, as it might get a bit hot going up there.

The Sun Temple

The sun temple is located near the summit of the Inca city and houses rocks that have the most intricate stone carving work on them. Most of the stones in this temple are held together by mud and have stonework on them. You will also find many walls and structures like stair cases that are made using closely fit stone work. Despite being made using primate technology, these walls have lasted the test of time and are standing tall even today.

Intihuatana

Intihuatana is a sun dial that was designed by the ancient Incas to work as clock based on shadow of the sun. The stone on which Intihuatana is made is also carved intricately and showcases the level of advance technology Inca tribes possessed.

The temple of three windows

This temple is located about 80km from the city of Cusco. The temple construction has three parallel windows that are situated next to one another on a stone wall. According to the legend, they represent the three levels of human lives i.e. the underground, the heaven and the present life. This temple has been very popular among tourists because of its unique construction and perfection.

Apart from these historically significant places, you might also want to visit the temple of Condor, Wayna Picchu and the moon temple. You can also hire a travel or tourist guide to help you take around places there.
