How Lifestyle Factors Can Trigger a Second Breast Cancer

Health

Have you already suffered from breast cancer? Are you aware of the factors that can trigger a second breast cancer in you? Well, many women do not have any clear idea about 'second breast cancer'. They do not even know how their uncontrolled lifestyle can affect the health of their second breast and lead to cancer once more. Hence, they often fall prey to this situation and develop a second breast cancer.

Lifestyle Factors to Increase the Risk
If you get in touch with a cancer specialist, you will know that women who had suffered from cancer in a single breast have almost 1 to 2 percent chance of developing the same in the second breast. This figure has been determined without taking any other risk factor into account. However, researchers have proved that there are certain lifestyle factors which can make women more prone to the condition and increase the percentage to a great extent. If no preventive measure is taken with enough time in hand, it might be impossible for them to prevent the situation.

The Scenario
It is extremely common in women around the world. Whether it is a developed country or a developing nation, the number of females suffering from cancer is increasing with each passing day. When it comes to the countries with maximum rates of breast cancer, the United States comes at the top of the list. The number of breast cancer cases detected in the country is as much as 200,000 each year. Though it is true that the way of treating the deadly disease has improved leading to an increased 5-year survival rate (over 90 percent), the chances of developing the same in the opposite breast have also gone considerably up among the survivors.

The Latest Study
A recent study published in the 'Journal of Clinical Oncology' has revealed that the reasons lying behind the development of second breast cancer is rooted in the lifestyle of the survivors. There are three key lifestyle factors like smoking, drinking and obesity which can trigger a second breast cancer in women.

The study was conducted by a group of cancer specialists from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle. They selected around 365 women, who had survived a first primary that was estrogen-receptor-positive (ER positive), and were further identified having a second breast cancer. Researchers also chose a total of 726 women, who had only developed an estrogen-receptor-positive (ER positive) primary breast cancer and survived it successfully. Both of these groups were questioned regarding their breast issues, lifestyles, medical history, etc., and the answers were compared as well as analyzed by the researchers thoroughly.

The Outcomes
The results of the study disclosed the following facts:
• Women, who are considered as obese and having a Body Mass Index (BMI) of more than 30 kilogram per meter square, are more prone to develop a second breast cancer than their counterparts having a Body Mass Index (BMI) less than 25 kilogram per meter square, and the chance is almost 50 percent higher.
• Those who consume more or less 7 glasses of alcohol a week after surviving a primary breast cancer are 70 percent more likely to develop a second breast cancer than those who do not drink at all.
• Smoking also has significant effects on the breast cancer survivors and it almost doubles the chance of developing a second breast cancer among them.

So, women should modify their lifestyles accordingly in order to stay away from a second breast cancer.
