The Jewel of the Boland- Robertson

Travel & Tourism
Often referred to as “the small town with a big heart,” Robertson is typical of the countryside which the local Afrikaans population call “n platteland.”The relaxed atmosphere is common in the region and it is for this reason that many people seeking refuge from the city retire to Robertson.

A brief history about Robertson takes us as far back as the mid nineteenth century. The village was named after Dr. William Robertson. Dr. Robertson was a minister of the Dutch Reformed Church, a Protestant sect that has had a profound influence in South Africa throughout most of the country’s recorded history.

The craftsmen of Robertson werefamous for their wagon building. The industry took a bad turn with the changing technologies. Railways were introduced, as were the beginnings of a mass industrialization of the farmlands to produce what is known assome of the finest wines in South Africa. The story of Robertson cannot be told without mentioning its award winning wines.

Route 62 is the longest wine route in the world. Premierevintages are produced at the many estates along the route. Some of the popular accommodation establishments include Tierhoek Cottage, Olive Garden Country Lodge, Little France Guest House and Orange Grove Farm. The list is endless. All these establishments boast charming architecture and warm hospitality. Once you’ve settled in, you can tour the many wine farms that abound the area. The most popular are Bon Cap Winery, Viljoensdrift Winery, Van Loveren and Robertson Winery.

The experience of wine tasting is a wonderful one. Very few people know that Brandy is also made from grapes. Since Robertson has plenty of grapes to spare, it is only appropriate that there would be brandy distilleries in the area. The most celebrated of these distilleries is the Klipdrift Brandy Distillery. Visiting the distillery gives you a better understanding of how the brandy is made, its history and its significance in the region. After a glass or two, you should view brandy as a rather generous wine that looks a lot like whiskey.

Many of the wine estates have their own restaurants. Bodega de Vinho at the Rooiberg Winery is a popular spot on the Route 62. Expect delectable meals served with fresh breads and other baked goods. Café Maude Restaurant is situated on the Bon Courage Wine Estate. The cafe is charming and is the perfect place to indulge in a steaming cup of cuppa chino and the ever popular red velvet cupcake. Reuben’s Restaurant at the Robertson Small Hotel uses natural and seasonal produce and demonstrates a progression towards organic living.

The people of Robertson have all that they desire right on their doorstep. Robertson’s self-catering establishments are popular because of their warm hospitality and cosy bedrooms. There are also many Robertson guest houses to choose from. Visit www.ubuntustay.com for more accommodation options in Robertson.
