Two popular fast food restaurants, McDonald’s and Burger King, have announced new, healthier menu options for spring. Starting on April 22nd, McDonald’s will now offer a 250-calorie Egg White Delight McMuffin served on a whole-grain English muffin. The McCafe line will also be adding a blueberry pomegranate flavor to its Real Fruit Smoothie line in May. The new options are part of a larger menu expansion for the fast food chain which spans across breakfast, beverage and chicken menus. The new menu will officially debut at the end of March with new Premium McWraps. Simultaneously Burger King will introduce its first-ever turkey burger. The addition of the turkey burger makes Burger King the first of the nation’s three largest burger chains to offer a turkey burger nationwide. Darren Tristano, executive vice president of Chicago-based Technomic Inc., said Burger King’s decision to offer a turkey burger ought to leverage the sandwich’s popularity with more Americans looking for more healthful offerings, even at quick-service restaurants. “Overall, this creates an effort toward a more healthful positioning for Burger King’s products,” Tristano said. “It not only may appeal to those looking for a different type of burger or a more healthful alternative, but it also might build up the brand’s reputation as a place to find it.” Competitors, Hardee’s and Carl’s Jr. were the first to introduce turkey burgers in March 2011. Burger King will also be introducing the Chipotle Whooper, a new veggie burger, along with other new menu options such as the Bacon Cheddar Stuffed Burger, Loaded Tater Tots and the Chipotle Chicken Sandwich or Wrap.
