In an attempt to boost sales after losses in the fourth quarter of 2012, the Jamba Juice smoothie chain is moving forward with a new plan that includes an expanded fresh juice bar. The company has been testing the refresh plan across three test stories in conjunction with a new store design that include displays of fresh produce and a more modern look. Sales at a test location in Santa Monica, Calif. have quadrupled as a result of the upgraded store and menu options. Overall, sales in stores with the expanded menu offerings jumped to 12% versus 3% in sales at stores without the juice bar menu. Jamba Juice is hoping to capture on the growing number of consumers that habitually use juice as a meal replacement or as a dietary cleanse with fresh juice options offering new ingredients such as kale, ginger, beets and apples. The company expects to add the new juice bar design to about 70 to 100 locations by mid-2013, starting with the company-owned locations. The redesign will move into the franchise system in 2014.
