SAN DIEGO, Calif. – July 6 -- NuestroTiempo.us has launched as an online publication with its main focus on issues such as immigration, education and health -- topics relevant to the Latino community. The Website is in English with translation capabilities so all readers can enjoy the articles. “Nuestro Tiempo.us is an objective, professional online publication that gives a sense of the Latino perspective and its rightful place in society,” said Julie Rocha, editor/publisher of the newly-launched Website. Social media has drastically changed the face of communication. In some cases, it is helping to increase awareness of and help put an end to ignorance of all kinds. “We are all painfully aware of the recent racist postings targeted towards eleven-year-old Sebastien DeLaCruz, who sang the National Anthem in his Mexican charro suit at game three of the NBA Finals in San Antonio” said Rocha. Thanks to positive social media postings, the youngster became an overnight sensation, gaining tremendous support from both Hispanic and mainstream audiences. Through it all, he stood tall and reminded the hate mongers that he is an American, born in San Antonio and is very proud of his Mexican heritage. In a show of support for young DeLaCruz, the Spurs invited him back the following game for an encore. “Many of us (Latinos) have suffered discrimination in the past, but when ignorance targets our children, especially in this day and digital age, you'll answer to the community,” said Rocha. “Our children are taught cultural pride in their homes and schools and Nuestro Tiempo will be an extension of that pride.” For those who might not be aware of the changing face of America, Rocha is quick to point out that one in every six Americans is Latino. That’s over 50 million Hispanics in the United States, or over 16 percent of the U.S. population, and growing, she noted. The publisher is no stranger to media. She published El Sol de San Diego, a bilingual newspaper that enjoyed a 20-year print run which garnering hundreds of journalism awards for its excellence in journalism. During her tenure as editor of the print publication, she had the honor of meeting Peter Jennings. “I was a panelist on ‘Ask the Media,’ a San Diego event which was hosted by my idol, Peter Jennings of ABC’s World News Tonight,” said Rocha. Among the other panelists was another news idol, San Diegan Neil Morgan, who Rocha considers one of the greatest journalists ever. “Participating in a news event and in the presence of these two news giants ranks high among the honors that have come my way as a journalist,” she said. Educational institutions, non-profits and groups are welcome to submit educational, entertaining and informational content that will be found interesting and beneficial to all readers. NuestroTiempo.us does not accept content about how to get rich, network marketing or multi-level marketing.
