When you visit your hearing center, you should ask how you can better care for your hearing aid. There are several things you can do to extend the life of your device, and with the help of the center's team, your device should last as long as possible. Hearing aids are technologically advanced devices, and it's important for you to take good care of them. Without your device you wouldn't be able to hear nearly as well if at all and if you don't take care of them they could fail far sooner than they would otherwise. A dehumidifier for your device is a wise investment. The simple act of wearing your device causes moisture to collect on and in the plastic. If your device gets wet accidentally or even on purpose, you need to be sure you can thoroughly dry it out. When you have a dehumidifier, you can dry out your device every night at home, saving time and money on repairs. Earwax is another reason that results in needed repairs. If you take good care of your device and keep it clean you're far less likely to need help as a result of wax buildup.. When you take your device out, you should always wipe it off with a clean, dry cloth. Cleaning the receiver opening and tubing is important as well, and many aids actually come with a tool designed for removing wax. There are some devices that can be partially taken apart and washed. Ask your hearing center staff how your personal device should be cleaned and maintained. Also, make sure you air out your device. If you don't have access to a dehumidifier, let your device breathe at night. The casing door on your device will open, allowing the inner workings to dry which helps them last longer. Keeping the device dry also increases battery life. Some parts wear out with the passage of time. Behind-the-ear (BTE) devices connect to the custom molded piece with a tiny plastic tube. As the BTE gets older, the tubing may stiffen and even crack. If the tube has gotten hard or is changing color, show your hearing center staff so they can deal with it. Typically this tubing requires replacement once a year. Take good care of your device and it will take good care of you. Today's devices are very advanced and do a much better job of amplifying sound than the old analog aids did. Ask your hearing center staff for help when you need it.
