Freshwater Pearls Freshwater Pearls are produced in a broad range of shapes, sizes and natural colors and are less expensive than Saltwater Pearls. Due to these advantages, Freshwater Pearls are very popular in today’s market and are used more in fashionable designs for a younger audience. Akoya Pearls Known as Seawater Pearls and also for their luster, Akoya Pearls are considered to be Classic Pearls and are more commonly White or Cream colored with overtones of Silver or Rose. Their sizes range from 2mm-9mm and are more constantly round or near round in shape. Tahitian Pearls Produced in the black lipped oyster Pinctada Margaritifera in and around Tahiti and the French Polynesia, the Tahitian Pearls are one of the most exceptional Pearls in the world. Their natural dark color magnetizes Pearl lovers from all corners of the globe. The majorities of Tahitian pearls are not Black in color, but come in a multitude of colors with the leading hue being green. Golden South Sea South Sea Pearls are amongst the largest commercially harvested cultured Pearls in the world, with an average size of a South Sea Pearl being 13mm (most harvests produce a range of sizes from 9mm to 20mm). These are much sought after for their size, color, shape and luster. White South Sea Large and luminous White South Sea pearls from Australia and the Philippians are the largest and rarest of all cultured pearl types in the world. Pearls cultured in the Pinctada Maxima saltwater oyster, which can grow up to a foot in diameter at maturation, routinely obtain sizes that range from 9.00mm up to an astonishing 21.0mm! The pearls golden and white colors are completely natural, needing no dyes or artificial enhancements. Chocolate Pearls Chocolate pearls are actually black Tahitian pearls, which have been treated to alter their appearance. These black pearls come from the black pearl oyster, or Pinctada Margaritifera, which is exceptionally sensitive to climate and water-temperature changes and often rejects attempts to be artificially stimulated to create pearls. The process is a slow one with a high failure rate and ensures that Tahitian black pearls can never be mass-produced in the same ways that cultured white pearls are. This accounts for their rarity and value. Visit www.umipearls.com to learn more about pearls and view a wide variety of beautiful pearl collection!
