Despite care taken by employers to train and educate workers in proper safety practices and equipment use, falls remain one of the main causes of injury and death in the workplace. Falls are prevalent at construction sites, mainly from ladders and roofs. Mistakes like failing to use proper equipment, equipment misuse, and use of faulty equipment can be avoided if care is taken to educate every worker and every employer. Being aware of the potential dangers before work begins and ensuring the equipment and workers are fully prepared to work in these environments is essential. Workers are the employer’s most valuable asset and they must be protected at all costs. A properly educated trainer can provide the necessary information to employers and employees to ensure that the workers are kept safe at all times. Fall Protection Training is designed to inform all employees of the potential fall hazards and the best way to avoid falls and minimize danger at the work site. Procedures for assembling and maintaining fall protection and arrest systems, and the use of these systems will be thoroughly covered as well as the role the employee plays in the safe use of all systems. Although fall protection equipment may seem straightforward in its use, without proper instruction there is huge potential for equipment to be misused. A harness may be applied, but it is not secured tightly enough. Equipment may be improperly assembled. The incorrect equipment may be used for a specific job Education is the key to ensuring that these things do not occur and that everyone is kept safe and free from falls. Not only do employees need to be properly instructed in fall protection training but they must also know that the equipment they are using is safe and up-to- date. Workers that are able to identify hazards and correctly use the equipment needed to protect themselves must also be sure that the equipment they are using is safe. A comprehensive fall protection plan includes regular fall protection equipment inspection by someone who is well qualified. Any equipment that is not up to the proper standards must be replaced no matter the cost. Every day use can cause wear and tear on equipment. In this time of financial stress there is often the temptation to use equipment beyond the time when it is safe to do so. This must be avoided and the employer must ensure that all staff is aware that safety comes first. Employers need to take it upon themselves to implement a culture at all work-sites that risks are not taken, especially where the potential for falls is present. The keys to fall protection are eliminating fall hazards, providing the proper fall prevention equipment and educating the workers in it use. If care is take to ensure these things are attended to you will have a much safer work environment and safe employees.
