Business cards are although small yet they are very significant as they represent our own standing in the society and professional rankings. These cards are present everywhere in our working environments from card cases to our crowded drawers, we find business cards everywhere. Business cards evolved from two different backgrounds. These backgrounds include formal visiting cards of the past that were used as cultural etiquette and were used on house calls persons of grand status and importance. The other backgrounds are the trading cards of the United Kingdom which were formerly effectively used as marketing tools and company or shop information cards. Business cards of today still can be used for marketing purposes as they may contain our information in such a way as to market our business. They are also a regular but neglected form of common communication. Bearer or trade cards were used in England and France in the late 16th and 17th Centuries. They were often ordinary playing cards which were signed and written on by someone to make them of value. Bearer cards were instruments that served as official memorandum of monetary exchange such as dept payments or promissory notes. On the other hand, visiting cards were used as a common social etiquette especially by people of higher living standard or aristocrats. Servants carried visiting cards prior to the arrival of a person of importance to inform the lady of the house to prepare for the arrival as per etiquette of the geographical region. It also became a symbol of fashion and trend among the royal court of Louis XIV of France. Working class or country people did not use these expensive courtesy methods and most of them were not in fact aware of lavish customs followed by people who had wealth as well as grand social status. These cards gradually grew socially and started to serve the purpose of simply producing an introduction of a person as well as his or her organizational affiliation. These cards were printed on paper stock that was coated with material that gave it a glossy feeling and smooth texture. Visual designs also started to appear on these cards such as doves and hearts. People started to keep the attractive cards of other people in their home. Trade cards were also quickly involving as they contained a merchant’s contact information as well as detail of his or her primary item of sale. As newspapers evolved, the use of trading cards gradually declined and modern business card designs started to appear in the world. Color lithography appeared and provided a much easier method of printing cards. It was also helpful in displaying simple images. As technology improved and trade and visiting cards started to emerge, we had cards that contained personal and business information in a simple and direct way. These cards have a person’s name, their home and business address as well as their company designations. Some people who run their own business also use cards that do not contain any company information such as freelance workers which are becoming very common these days. The business cards of today continue to evolve and we may see a new trend in them in a few decades time.
