Ping have moved from the conventional shiny look to a mat black finish throughout their drivers, fairways & hybrids and what a difference that makes in look. Let's look at Ping G25 Fairway Wood.
Compared to the previous model, the G25 fairway has a thinner face and more weight lower and further back to increase ball speed and certainly it did seem to go as well as the cheap G20 fairway wood. You can see the screw weight in the back of the sole section, which again is a visual change that some will like more than others.
The G25 is offered in a 3, 4, 5 & 7 wood variants with a stock shaft (Ping TFC). It comes in 5 different shaft options starting at a Soft Regular & peaking at the Tour X Stiff. By using an extreme variable-thickness face, Ping's R&D team were able to trim weight from the face and place it lower and further back in the club.
These fairway woods launch fairly high in comparison to other manufacturers fairway woods and that is due to the lower and deeper centre of gravity. By also having a high MOI, the cheap golf clubs G25 is one of the easiest clubs to hit and misses are far straighter than most other fairways…this is always a plus as its not necessarily how good your good shots are, but how good your bad shots are & this in turn aids in lowering one’s scores.
Combine this with an external sole weight and naturally the club's CG moves lower and further back as well, increasing the club's forgiveness, especially on shots struck on the lower portion of the face (an area Ping claims is the most common 'miss-hit').
Although the new finish makes the G25 look more like the newer i20 or cheap G15 fairway wood, it is designed to offer 'G' level forgiveness and launch characteristics, and will add 0.5 to 1mph faster ball speed, than the previous G20 fairway, thanks to the new face design and centre of gravity location.
