Apple Inc. is building another place to feed its legion ofemployees. The pervasive high-tech giant received city approval toconstruct a new 21,468-square-foot cafeteria exclusively for Appleworkers. The Cupertino Planning Commission gave the project unanimous finalapproval on April 24. Cupertino residents and Apple-loving tourists, however, can forgetabout dining at the cafeteria. The eatery will be a place foremployees to freely talk business without fear of eavesdropping. "We like to provide a level of security so that people andemployees can feel comfortable talking about their business, theirresearch and whatever project they're engineering without fear ofcompetition sort of overhearing their conversations," Dan Whisenhunt, Apple's director of real estatefacilities, said at the April 24 meeting. "That is a real issuetoday in Cupertino because we've got other companies here in oursame business." Apple's plan is to build a two-story, cafeteria-style facility toaccommodate employees who work out of the company's varioussatellite buildings along Bandley Drive on the west side of N. DeAnza Boulevard. Casually dressed Apple employees are a frequent weekday sightwandering along N. De Anza Boulevard around lunchtime. Most ofthese employees walk or bike across the busy boulevard to thecafeteria located in the Infinite Loop campus. The project site is on the northeast corner of Bandley and Alvesdrives, near a hotel that's under construction. A majority of theoffices in the area are occupied by Apple. The facility will have a cafe, meeting rooms, lounge areas andcourtyard space. The second floor will be used only by employees ofthe cafeteria, and will accommodate storage, mechanical andconference rooms, as well as staff locker rooms and restrooms. An underground garage will be approximately 27,099 square feet, with 70 parking stalls. However, it is expected most employees willbike, walk or take the company shuttles to the cafeteria. The cafeteria will also be very green. Striving for Leadership inEnergy and Environmental Design platinum certification, the projectis expected to demonstrate water and energy efficiency, recycle andreuse construction materials where appropriate, and promotesustainability, according to a city staff report. The roof willalso have solar panels and screens to obscure rooftop equipment. The cafeteria will likely be open only on weekdays for breakfastand mid-afternoon dining. The expected rush hour will be roughly11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., according to Whisenhunt. Apple already has five employee-dedicated cafes, plus roughly adozen smaller cafes that offer grab-and-go breakfast and lunchoptions. In addition, the company is working on adding anothercafeteria at the Results Way campus off of Bubb Road, Whisenhunttold the commission. Other site features surrounding the project include pedestrianamenities such as fire pits, lounge furniture, water features, wooddecks, trellises and decorative courtyard lighting. The buildingexterior will feature glass-fiber reinforced concrete, framelesswindows and steel finishes. The cafeteria design received the thumbs up from the commission. "Just like everything Apple does, it has a flavor of very highquality to it, and from an architectural standpoint, it's a goodaddition to the city," commission chairman Marty Miller said.
