Travelling around any one of the UK’s famous cities you need to stay safe. Cities are exciting places often rich in culture and history however they can also be the homes of hidden dangers. You need to have your wits about you because you will be on unfamiliar territory and you will be concentrating on the sites or trying to find directions. When visiting unfamiliar cities you may be there for a number of reasons; shopping, theatre, pubs & clubs, museums or art galleries. London is a city with many tourist attractions – you may be there to take a trip on the London Eye, or to visit The Houses of Parliament or Buckingham Palace. Other major cities include Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle, Birmingham or Liverpool – Scotland is the home to some very exciting cities such as Edinburgh and Glasgow. Before setting off do your research and plan your day, cities are big places and unless you have lots of time on your hands you will need to plan your trip. Transport systems in other cities are often complicated if you have not used them before. Download maps and work out the best way to travel. When on transport systems this is a time for putting safety first. You often get pickpockets or muggers and you can help to avoid this unfortunate event by travelling light. Always travel with someone such as your partner or a few friends – if you are young think safety in numbers. It may sound like a cliché however do not go down any back alleys and avoid quiet areas – stay within the busy spots. There are numerous places that offer lockers so you can keep extra bags while you travel around, or you can drop them off at your hotel or bed and breakfast beforehand. Only carry a small bag and hold it close to your body while on transport. Keep cash to a minimum and never put a mobile or camera in your pocket. By securing your personal belongings when on the move you stand a better chance of keeping hold of them. The other danger is that you may accidently put something down and forget to pick it up in the confusion of searching for trains or buses. If you do happen to lose a bag you can contact lost property experts who can reunite you with your belongings. Security staff and general members of the public often find lost property and it is handed into the experts who store these items until the owners search them out. If you have lost some property when travelling around one of the UK’s busiest transport hubs, during a city break, search for Lostproperty.org and Lost Property London will pop up.
