I had the 2013 new Taylormade R1 driver for about two weeks. This driver is really cool looking and can be extremely helpful to some golfers.
From my experience with this driver, if you already hit the ball fairly straight and just need extra distance, this is not the driver for you. If you normally hook or slice, this driver will help to straighten out that ball flight and as a result, you will see some extra distance off the tee. Using the multiple adjustments, you can create a higher or lower ball flight. You can straighten out a slice, fade, draw and even a hook.
I went to the range on 3 separate occasions and put this driver up against my Taylormade R1 Black driver. My recommendation is to bring your current driver to the store and hit your driver as well as the one you're considering. If your current driver is producing similar or better results, spend the cash on a weekend get-away instead. For many golfers, the R1 will be a benefit.
The latest and most opinionated buzz surrounding the new TaylorMade R1 driver is over the way the crown looks. While not necessarily as bold as TaylorMade's previous decision to move to white-crowned drivers, the black and orange racing stripe and alignment decal sure will generate some eyerolls.
Word is, however, that the R1 wasn't designed simply as a marketing ploy or to 'pack a punch.' Rather, the decal is another tool in the golfer's toolbox in the form of an alignment indicator. A similar design can also be found on the Taylormade RBZ Stage 2 driver price. The added loft settings are extremely important because of the R1′s lower, more forward center of gravity, as most golfers will underestimate the amount of loft they’ll need for optimal launch conditions.
The crown graphics aren't the only tweaks to Taylor Made's newest driver model. The face was also made taller than in the best price Taylormade R11S driver, which gives golfers a larger face area. The weights are designed to promote neutral flight or draws. And the face angle adjustability is a necessity as well, because a 1-degree change in loft on the R1 will result in a 2-degree change in face angle.
Golfers who choose to play the latest TaylorMade driver have no excuse for not playing the right loft --- and improving their game.
