A tree worker remains in critical condition after suffering"life-threatening" injuries Friday when one leg became entangled inthe grinding wheel of a large mechanical stump grinder he was usingat a North Street home, officials said. The worker was identified Monday as Hector Guerra , of Port Chester, N.Y. Police said the man is in his 50s, but theydid not provide his exact age. Guerra was transported to Stamford Hospital Friday following the accident. As of Tuesday night, Guerra wasstill in critical condition, hospital officials said. The injuredman was part of a group of four workers at a house located at 537North St. After Guerra got caught in the machine -- which removes tree stumpswith a rotating cutting disk that chips away the wood -- policesaid another worker turned off the stump grinder and pulled Guerraout. Police said Guerra was a employee of Shady Tree Inc., which is registered to a residence on Anderson Road. Amessage seeking comment was left with the company Monday. Friday's accident prompted a response from the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration . Area Director Robert Kowalski said Monday there was an open investigation into the accident, buthe declined to comment any further. Friday's accident happened on the lot of a 10,900-square-foot NorthStreet home that has six beds and seven and a half baths and sitson an approximately three-acre lot, according to an online realestate web site. This is the second serious work-related accident to happen in townin the past six months. In November 2010, Eric Chinchilla , 27, of Stamford, was killed after a concrete slab dropped on topof him while working on a porch along the side of a home at 2MacPherson Drive. The house was unoccupied because of renovations.Fire officials said at the time they believed the workers did notproperly shore the trenches surrounding the concrete slab causingthe accident. Kowalski said the company in that case, identified as Edvin SosaContracting company, was issued citations by OSHA last week. Thespecifics surrounding the citations were not released Mondaybecause Kowalski said they cannot be made public until the companyacknowledges they received them.
