Many know what a blood pressure monitor is and how useful it is for measuring blood pressure, especially in people who suffer from hypertension. But even though this is a vital device in hospitals and similar settings, not many know how it works. With that in mind, in the following paragraphs, this article will focus on explaining some of the basic functions of digital blood pressure monitors and the types available. Types When individuals want to test their blood pressure, they will basically get 2 blood pressure readings. The number on the bottom of the screen is known as the diastolic pressure, while the number on the top of the screen is known as the systolic pressure. Manual Type There are a few types of sanguine pressure monitors out there and one of them is the manual type. It consists of a rubber bulb (which is responsible with pumping up the cuff), the manual gauge and the inflatable arm cuff. However, in order to determine the patient's heart rate, it needs to be used in conjunction with a stethoscope. When it's used, the nurse will place it on the patient's upper arm so that it's around the same height with the patient's heart. Next, the nurse will move on to pumping up the bulb so that the cuff can inflate fast and cut off the blood circulation in the arm. After this, the pressure will be released slowly and the nurse will listen (using the stethoscope) to the artery for a noise, noise which is basically the blood that starts to pump again in the patient's arm. When this happens, the dial will also display the value of the systolic pressure. Eventually, with the noise disappearing and the cuff continuing to deflate, the nurse will be able to read the diastolic pressure on the dial. Digital Type The digital version features a digital gauge and a cuff and when it's started, the digital cuff will start inflating automatically. The patient's heart rate and blood pressure will be measured as the pressure will slowly be released. Maintaining Accuracy In terms of accuracy, the quality and brand of the digital sanguine pressure monitor can make a great difference. One thing that people need to bear in mind is that blood pressure readings will always be higher in the morning, so for those who monitor themselves every day, they should avoid doing it after waking up. Also, it's recommended that people don't drink anything that contains caffeine nor smoke for at least half an hour before testing themselves. Another vital aspect in a correct measuring process is the fitting of the digital blood pressure monitor. That is why before taking the reading, individuals will need to raise their arm to their heart level and rest for around five minutes. Taking a reading while having a full bladder is also discouraged. With that being said, these are the aspects people need to know about blood pressure monitors. By being aware of them, they'll be able to easily and correctly take their blood pressure and if needed, seek medical help. Thanks for reading my articles!
