In a fresh and final attempt to clear his name, the member forDobell opened by revealing some of the threats made against himselfand his family. "Go cut your wrists, or better yet hang yourself. You aredead," he said. He then pointed to the Opposition and accused them of playing arole in his trial by media. "You have unleashed the lynch mob. And you've fanned it. Andfor that, you are all, ultimately responsible," he said. "None of the allegations have been tested in any tribunal orcourt." Mr Thomson then continued by accusing the media of playing judgeand jury during the scandal. "In the eyes of many of the public I've already beenconvicted, charged and sentenced," he said. "I, like every member of this House, value the importance ofan independent and robust news media. "However all of us... know the news media can often get itwrong. Particularly today, the media is dominated by self-importantcommentators." Hear from the people - how Labor lost Dobell's confidence In an exclusive interview with The Daily Telegraph ahead of his speech today, Mr Thomson maintained his innocence, repeating he was the victim of identity fraud and an elaboratepolitical sting orchestrated by enemies within the scandal-riddenunion he once ran. "I'm going to speak to Victorian police today," MrThomson said. "It is my understanding that under licensing rules in NSW they(brothels) must keep footage for six years. I am going to ask themto look at footage of those nights." It is unclear whether brothels in NSW are required to keep tapesfor that length of time. Even so, a six-year period would not coverall of the alleged dates.
