How Search Engines Differ from One Another

Marketing
Doppler Internet makes it a point that their client’s pages are ranked in search engines and they continuously think of ways on how to maintain their rankings.

Search engines come in various types, these are: Crawler - Based Search Engines, Human - Powered Directories, Hybrid Search Engines, and Meta-Search Engines.

Crawler – Based Search Engines are those who automatically create listings by using software to crawl or spider the web. It browses the World Wide Web in a methodical and automated manner thus it is also called web crawling. Crawlers are used in many sites, particularly in search engines to provide up to date data. They are primarily used to produce a copy of visited pages for index purposes.

Crawlers are best used when you have a specific search topic because it can be very well-organized making it easier for you to find the most appropriate information however, when the search topic is in general form, crawler – based search engines can give you more information wherein some of them are already irrelevant. It will show hundreds of thousands of documents or searches even if the general topic searched was only used once.

Some of the famous Crawler – Base Search Engines are the following:
• Google (www.google.com)
• Ask (www.ask.com)
• Yahoo! Slurp
• AlltheWeb (www.alltheweb.com)
• Teoma (www.teoma.com)
• Inktomi
• AltaVista

Another type of search engine is Human-powered directories, such as the Yahoo directory, Open Directory and LookSmart. In this case, they depend on human editors with regards to the listings. Webmasters will submit a brief description to the directory for their websites and these will then be manually edited and used as search base. Changes can be made to individual web pages without taking effect on how the pages were enlisted in the search results.

This kind of search engine is best used when you are interested on a general topic research. The directory then can guide you and will help you narrow your search to have refined results. These only shows that human – powered directories are frequently more relevant when it comes to search topics.

Examples of Human-powered directories are Yahoo Directory
(www.yahoo.com) and Open Directory (www.dmoz.com)

The third type of search engine is the Hybrid Search Engine. It is a kind of computer program that utilizes different kinds of data to gather results. It is a combination of Crawler – Based and Human – Powered Listings. Yahoo and Google are examples of hybrid search engines.

Another type is the Meta – Search Engine (MSE). The MSE takes the results from all search engines and combine them to make one large listing. They also transmit user-supplied keywords at the same time to several individual search engines to carry out the search. This kind of search engine is best used to save time by searching only in one place and removing the need to use the other search engines.

The following are samples of Meta – Search Engines:

• Metacrawler (www.metacrawler.com)
• Dogpile (www.dogpile.com)
• Mamma (www.mamma.com)

The last type is the specialty search engines that are created and developed to cater the demands of the some areas. These engines focus on a particular topic that range from art, business, academe, literature, medicine, music, science, sports and a lot more. They are often called specific search engines because of their narrow focus and emphasis. Some of them operate and run their own spiders that crawl through definite sites and index the content and information from those sites only. This allows internet users to enter or type in general terms and immediately locate the information that they are searching for. Because of the narrow range of topics they cover, they often give more quality search results that are more relevant than what general search engines provide.

Search engines can be considered as the foundation of the Internet. They are quickest way to find information, product or services that users wants. Doppler Internet, being an internet marketing company, knows the importance of search engine management that includes search engine optimization. ">How Search Engines Differ from One Another
