The stock market in South Africa is known as the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. This is where companies come to raise capital by way of selling shares in the company. Stock trader training in South Africa leading to membership in the SAIS can occur several ways. Pathways to Becoming a Stock Trader Become a trader needs to highly knowledgeable in many areas. This requires college level education. Some qualifications allow for immediate membership into the SAIS. Those with a more generalized education can also become members by taking industry specific courses offered by the SAIS. Specialized Qualifications - Due to the intensive coursework in finance and the financial markets, certain qualifications allow for immediate membership in the SAIS. These are: B. Com (Hons.) Investment Advice, Chartered Accountant in South Africa, and Chartered Financial Analyst. University Degree - Individuals with a university degree can qualify for membership in the SAIS by completing the Programme in Investment Analysis & Portfolio Management (PIA and PM) course. Alternative Options - Individuals without a university degree can still qualify for SAIS membership by completing specialized courses offered by the SAIS and the Institute of Bankers in South Africa. This process can take several years to complete. The Role of Experience Some employers require membership in the SAIS prior to starting work whereas other will hire individuals without that membership but who are committed to taking courses leading up to SAIS membership. Either way, inexperienced stock traders will receive in-house training and mentoring from their employers. This may take the role of job shadowing, assisting with some duties such as filing and completing sales forms, researching company financial statements and sitting in on client meetings.
