Pick up any recent copy of either Writer's Digest, The Writer and even Poets and Writers Digest and you'll most likely see a cover or at least one major story on self-publishing. Clearly, the days of thinking that traditional publishing is the only way to get your book published are over. That's the good-maybe the great news for writers bursting with a story to tell. A millionaire several times over made this statement several years ago on his blog:... I'm never going to publish in the morgue of the publishing industry again... The book publishing industry is dead and they don't know it." James Altucher is a successful hedge fund manager who has founded or co-founded a number of companies; Altucher has also published five books on finance with traditional publishing houses. More recently, he has published three new books with Amazon. Altucher's bold statement in a 2008 blog seems to be proving itself as we witness the wars between Amazon and the mostly New York based literary agents. In that sense then the field has never been more wide open to those of us who love writing and feel that we have something to contribute to the marketplace. Recently, I have joined the ever- expanding ranks of authors who have decided to self-publish and wrote three E-Books which are now available at Kindle, one of which is available in print. Prior to that, I had published extensively but again, like him, had made very little money due to the fact that I wrote in an extremely narrow field of interest as well as the tepid marketing efforts of the publishers. If you are considering self publishing your book, I do have some tips which may save you some time over the long run. Make sure you are clear about your goal. What I mean by that is that if you require the prestige of a major publishing house for your novel then self-publishing may not be advisable. But if your goal is to get your story told then this route may be perfect. Perhaps you are aware of the phenomenon of Paul Young's book The Shack and certainly of JK Rollings' Harry Potter series. But did you know they were both originally self-published by the authors? Young wrote The Shack as a story for his children and due to pressure from friends, agreed to self-publish the work for them - recent estimates place sales at just over 10 million copies. Rollins sold her Harry Potter series as E-Books directly from her website, Pottermore E-Books- just like print books tend to appeal -or not-to the eye. I began on the cheap and wasted a lot of time creating do-it-yourself E-Book covers until I realized that there are a number of people available on-line who can create great-in one case- stunning E-Book covers for a very reasonable price. Format- formatting your Word or PDF file into a method which can be easily read on Kindle or any of the other E-Readers is critical. I wasted a good deal of time and money before I realized once again that there are folks who know how to format your book at a more than reasonable cost. If you are writing basic print text, the differences between the various iterations of E-Readers will not be problematic. But if you are writing poetry, the formatting can be quite troublesome so it will be critical to wotk with someone who understands the unique needs of spacing for poems. article critique writing
