Finding Self-Employed Hairdresser Jobs

Education,Career,Business
With your training complete and experience under your belt, you may decide that you want to move onto life as a self-employed hairdresser. There are multiple benefits to this. Not only do you have the chance to set your own hours, you can find a client base that is loyal to you. However, this is about more than breaking out your scissors and getting snip happy. You need to know where to find those self-employed hairdresser jobs first. Fortunately, arming yourself with the right information is a useful way to progress and source work.

Do You Need Premises?

As a hairdresser, you are going to need somewhere to cut hair. The option of working as a mobile hairdresser will be explored later. For now, it is a good idea to think about premises options. One simple way to set yourself up is to 'rent a chair' in a nearby salon. This comes with multiple benefits. Not only do you not have to worry about utilities, you benefit from facilities that are there and waiting. If you do not mind working with others, or under someone else's brand, this is an affordable way to source hairdressing jobs as a self-employed person. On the other hand, you may dislike the idea of not forming your own brand. If you have always envisioned yourself developing a business image, then you need to look towards developing your own hairdresser store. Shop around carefully, and you may find somewhere for rent with everything included. However, in many cases, you need to purchase a property and get everything installed. This is only an option for those with decent start-up capital.

Should You be Going Mobile?

Going mobile removes the headaches associated with finding your own premises. An increasing number of people prefer to keep their hairdressers within their home. Older people and those with children especially enjoy this option. Parents do not have to worry about their kids tearing around and disturbing other customers when the hairdresser is in their home. As someone who goes mobile, you need to put a little more effort into marketing than someone with a store-front. Becoming a mobile hairdresser means you have to develop your own website, push leaflets through doors, and hand out business cards. However, the marketing does get easier once clients start passing your details onto their friends.

Sourcing Hairdresser Jobs Using Your Reputation

When you first go self-employed, the jobs you secure will depend largely on your reputation. If you have already worked as an employed person, don't be afraid to let customers know about your plans. In addition to this, you need to treat all new customers exceptionally well. Do what you can to stand out, and people will let their friends know about you. It is often the case that word-of-mouth will act as your best marketing tool. Once you establish a great reputation, hairdresser jobs will practically fly at you.
