Stephen Souky has been a girls’ basketball coach in the Niskayuna NY area for about as long as he can remember. Stephen Souky’s passion for coaching girls’ basketball began many years ago, and has blossomed into a full-time commitment and a real source of joy for the 43 year old. Since coaching is often a volunteer position, it complements Stephen Souky’s other love: volunteering. Here Stephen Souky volunteers some coaching tips he has used to get the most out of his coaching experience. He likes to stress the three Ps: - Philosophy. Coaching without a philosophy is like trying to give a speech that has no purpose, according to Stephen Souky. You will end up floundering. Developing a coaching philosophy is essential to becoming a good coach and to motivating your young players to succeed. Stephen Souky’s personal coaching philosophy stresses playing hard and having fun. He tries to make sure everyone is trying their best, but not at the expense of remembering that in the end it is just a game.
- Practice. This aspect is twofold. First, Stephen Souky says, you must develop a practice routine for your team to follow. But second, and just as important, you must practice yourself. Like anything, coaching takes practice, says Stephen Souky; no one is simply born knowing how to coach. It takes some knowledge, and some trial and error, to get things right. Stephen Souky has been coaching for years and still learns new things about the job just about every day.
- Parents. Parents are an inevitable part of any youth coaching program. Parents come in all shapes and sizes, says Stephen Souky, and it’s important to recognize that you are there to help their children be the best they can be. It can be a real trial to deal with some pushy and overbearing parents, but Stephen Souky advises exercising patience and assuring parents that you are doing your best to keep things fair and even and fun for all. Some parents cannot be placated, but Stephen Souky has found that for the most part being calm but firm is a good way to get pushy parents to see that you are working from a place of the best intentions.
Following these basics will not guarantee your team a spot in the championships, says Stephen Souky, but they are some very good cornerstones on which to base any coaching career. http://www.coachesclipboard.net/CoachingYouthBasketball.html http://www.humankinetics.com/products/all-products/coaching-girls-basketball-successfully
