Voltaire said, “To be is to do”… René Descartes said, “To do is to be”… and Frank Sinatra said, “Do be do be doo” and the reason he said that is that he forgot the words to the song he was singing and he improvised, and this creativity became a trademark for that Sinatra song forever. Creativity is one of the five rules we will be talking about in this article. When you follow these rules you will be able to program your future and career for success. These rules are based on the reality of what works and what does not, just like computer instructions. If you use them properly, you CAN succeed. REALITY RULE #1 — Always provide clear, accurate, and concise communications. Webster defines communications as “a process by which information is exchanged.” Communications take a minimum of two people or machines. When computer systems communicate with each other, if they do not understand something, they stop until they do. Since the high tech business is filled with slang, abbreviations and instant made up words, it is easy to get confused. And once you are confused, the communications link is broken. If you relay facts accurately without modifying them or adding your own commentary, you will become known as a “Reliable Source” and you start to earn a special reputation as “someone to be listened to.” Accurate communications can be tricky. I am reminded of a story that happened to me a few years ago. I was working with a hardware manufacturing company. I was in a meeting with the sales and manufacturing departments. The question came up as to when they would ship a new product. Manufacturing said it would be in August. Sales said, “Fine. That is what we told the customers.” They started to move on to the next subject when I interrupted and said that there was a communications problem. Both departments stared at me and said, “Why?” I asked manufacturing what was the exact date in August that they would ship — they said it was August 31st. Then I asked sales what date they gave the customers, and they said it was August 1st. They were 30 days apart and did not realize it because of faulty communications. In your speech, email, meetings, memos, reports, programs, notes and presentations, you must always provide clear, accurate, and concise communications. This is one of the keys to business of today.
