The village of Valor can be found in the Alpujarras región of Granada, a rough mountainous area full of ancient customs and traditions. The village owes its existence to the Moors and was the birthplace of the rebel leader, Aben Humeya. Aben Humeya wa proclaimed king of the Andalucians in 1568, born in 1520 into a prominent Arabic family, who in 1492 converted to the Christian faith. Aben Humeya rejected the Christian faith and became a rebel leader until he was overthrown by his cousin Aben Aboo. Aben Humeya was a harsh leader and some say his followers grew to hate him, eventually leading to his assassination in 1569, others say he was assassinated by Arab double agents acting for the Castillian Royal family. The rebellion was finally put down in 1571 by Juan De Austria, the brother of the King. To this day the villagers celebrate every year the defeat of the Moors by the Christians, dressing up and igniting large quantities of dynamite.
