No matter how healthy an animal is, it is prone to fall prey to parasites and intestinal disorders. Fenbendazole is one drug that comes as a helping hand to combat all the intestinal concerns in animals. The drug belongs to the category of Benz-imidazole anthelmintic and is abbreviated across the globe as "FBZ". The Hoechst chemical company brand names incude Safe-Guard and Panacur and the Intervet Pharmaceutical Company identifies it as Panacur Rabbit and Panacur. What is Fenbendazole all about? The systematic IUPAC name for this drug is methyl N-(6-phenylsulfanyl-1H-benzoimidazol- 2-yl)carbamateand its chemical formula is C15H13N3O2S. Uses of the Fenbendazole drug This Benz-imidazole anthelmintic is frequentlyand predominantly used to eliminate and fightmultiple concerns arising due to gastro-intestinal parasites in a large group of animals - from large to small ones. Fenbendazole is administered to household pets like cats and dogs to cattle, sheep, fishes, rabbits, farm animals, horses and also seals. They are quite effective against several parasites like giardia, whipworms, roundworms, hookworms, taenia tapeworm species, some specific parasites & tapeworms known as strongyloides and strongyles, paragonimiasis, aelurostrongylus and pinworms.When it comes to household pet animals like dogs and cats, they are commonly infected with parasites mostly in the sub-clinical aspects. In such cases, these pets do not show any signs at all. How can the drug be availed? Fenbendazole is available only “over the counter” and is bound by a set of guidelines for its administration. There are certain contradictions that need to be taken care of while its administration to the infected animal and so, the dosage must always be given under expert supervision and veterinarian guidance. Drug Contradictory and Interactions Specifications • Drug interactions are expected to occur in infected animals when using bromsalan flukicides like tribrimsalan and dibromsalan. Specifically in cattle animals like sheep, many abortions and death have been reported once these medications are administered. • For animals showing signs of allergy and hypersensitivity to fenbendazole, the drug should not be given. • There have been many signs of toxicity shown in species like birds, and reptiles, despite being used as de-wormer. • The drug is also known to be very poorly absorbed in most species by their gastrointestinal tract when given in irrational and uncontrolled doses. Safe Dosage in the General Perspective Fenbendazole can be administered in all the above mentioned animals and works as an effective de-wormer against gastro-intestinal parasites of different kinds. However, it is always advisable to administer the right amount of dosage under the guidance of an animal health specialist. From puppies to dogs which are debilitated or female pregnant dogs and ones who are infected by heartworm. In household pets like cats and dogs, an effective dosage is found to be 25 mg per pound (50 mg/kg). This dose can be given daily for a minimum of three consecutive days. However, they might show signs of vomiting. The therapy of deworming is very effective when the drug is mixed in the food and the pets consume it entirely.
