You might think I'm crazy to suggest a bedroom makeover whose primary inspiration and starting point is a puppet. Okay, maybe it is a little crazy, but come along with me on this journey of several decorative steps. We start with a pair of incredibly colorful, exquisitely made Chinese puppets, and we wind up in a bedroom that reflects a thoroughly oriental, warm and visually striking space. The beauty of this makeover is also in its simplicity and ease, in that we create an overall impression with just a few well-chosen and well-placed pieces of decorative art and decorative furnishings. So first, the puppets! I like the Mu Guiying and Ba Wang as a pairing. They are decoratively balanced with strong reds and blacks and fabulous embroidery, so they make quite a visual statement; yet, they are delicate and elegant, and invite close inspection of their detail. Metaphorically, they are also a very good, very harmonious pair, in that Mu Guiying represents a young, beautiful woman possessed of a general's status and authority; she was responsible for managing personnel and resources, and delegating tasks to the officers in her command. Ba Wang, a title of nobility, was a widely recognized and undisputed overlord who possessed ultimate authority during his era of influence in China's ancient history, yet never claimed the title of Emperor. Together, they represent confidence, authority, reserve and respected leadership…perfect for a master bedroom! I would mount these on a wall, perhaps as bedside accents, each over a beautiful white dragon lamp. The dragon lamp possesses equal detail and complexity in shape, to balance the composition of the puppet, but is solid in color, and so does not create a cacophony of color pattern. As a larger, focal wall piece over the bed, I might choose Fortune Calligraphy, to encourage its positive and beneficial omens to spill into the room and into my dreams! Additionally, I might choose a large-scale canvas screen on which a beautiful dragon curves and mount it flat on a broad, windowless wall. A standing room divider depicting a palace garden with its zen-inspiring spherical shape and bold, red color might be an interesting option, as well. A pair of complementary vases placed on the floor or a bureau add an additional touch of oriental aesthetic that harmonizes with the accent palette we have created here. Bedding to pull all of these elements together might be dark and rich in color to anchor the room. Solstice would do this beautifully, with its leaf motif that echoes the palace garden scenery. Or, if you prefer a lighter, more neutral approach, there is Serenity, with a similar botanical motif that could be beautifully embellished with a few bold accent pillows that coordinate all the colors and patterns of your oriental respite. I hope you will find your own path to an oriental makeover!
