As we all know, there are two main scoliosis treatment methods all over the world now, one is surgery and the other is non-surgical treatment for scoliosis. Which one to choose depends on the different requirements of the patient. And firstly, we must have a better understanding of the differences between the two treatment methods for scoliosis. We can see the differences between the two treatment methods from several items: the risk of treatment, effect of the treatment, side effects, complications, sequel of treatment, duration of the treatment, cost of the treatment, and so on. The risk of the scoliosis surgery is obvious. The doctors will cut the back of the patients open, and put in some metal or some certain kinds of materials into the body of the patient. The nerve along the spine is possible to be influenced by the operation. There is the great risk of the numbness of the parts of the body or even paralysis. But the risk of the non-surgical scoliosis treatment is free. Nothing bad will happen in the treatment. There are no side effects and complications either. The possible complications and side effects of surgery including some injury to the inner organs like heart and lung, the severe pains of the back, unbend able back, and again some numbness of some parts of the body some years later and so on. The duration of the surgery may be one or two weeks while the duration of conservative treatments may be longer-it will be 1-3 months based on the different condition of the patients. The cost of the conservative treatments varies a lot from what exactly the treatment procedures will be done during the treatment while the surgery of the scoliosis is much more expensive than the conservative treatment. And of course usually the effect of the surgery will be better than the conservative treatment in severe scoliosis cases if we focus only the change of the curve of the spine. For example, here is a patient with a curve of 50 degrees. The curve of the spine will be reduced to about 10 degrees by surgery while 35 degrees by conservative treatment at one cycle. But for mild and moderate scoliosis, non-surgical scoliosis treatment will be better while the surgery can do nothing about it. From all the information and comparison above, we can see both surgery and non-surgical scoliosis treatments have their advantages and disadvantages. Which one is more suitable for one certain case depends on the expectations of the patients. Make a reasonable choice is very important.
