Titleist gave members of its tour staff their first opportunity to hit the new Titleist 913 D2 Driver and Titleist 913 d3 driver. On Monday at Bethpage State Park, home of the Black Course and site of this week's Barclays Championship, players like Zach Johnson, Charley Hoffman and Tom Gillis were shown the company's yet-to-be-released 913F and 913F.d fairway woods. While the Titleist 913F Fairway Wood is designed to appeal to golfers who want more distance in a traditional fairway wood, the 913F.d -- with a slightly larger head and a center of gravity that is closer to the face -- was built to appeal to players who like to hit their 3-wood off the tee and maneuver the ball around the course. The hosel still comprises the SureFit Tour adjustment system which we think is still the best adjustable hosel in the market as it enables you to change loft and lie independently of each other. The previous 910F hosel was not that bulky or off putting to us, but by shortening and slimming down the hosel the 913F does look a lot better. However, by making the crown slightly thinner and the adjustable sleeve that connects the shaft to the head lighter and tapered, Titleist engineers were able to shave some weight and then reposition it in a flat pad positioned in the sole. While the weight pad is near the back of the 913F, it is noticeably more forward in the 913F.d. Titleist says that both clubs now spin the ball less, with the 913F producing the same trajectory as the 910F while the 913Fd launches the ball a little higher than the 910F.d, but still lower than the 913F. Now with the slightly increased size, the 157cc head and a larger, faster sweetspot it is now much more forgiving and playable for more single figure handicappers. If you have a 910F you can expect to gain an extra 1 mph ball speed combined with 250 rpm less spin using the 913F fairway wood and that should gain you around 6 yards, which is significant.
