With the launch of their new 714 irons, Titleist is striving to provide distance irons that have shot-stopping ability, and maximum forgiveness with workability. The long Titleist AP1 714 Irons feature thin faces that are designed to increase ball speed. Behind the face, the 714 AP1s again have been designed with a dual-cavity construction that is now enhanced by a deep undercut beneath the topline in the upper cavity. The lower cavity houses a high-density tungsten weight in the toe section that helps to pull the sweet spot more to the center of the hitting area. Titleist has redefined the term "serious golfer" so that it refers not only to scratch players but also to committed golfers who are willing to dedicate time to the game. Titleist's AP1 family of irons are the most forgiving. Since forgiveness in an iron is speed, the goal of the AP1 irons is to generate the same amount of ballspeed across the face. Consequently, each iron within the set is designed differently. The long irons (3, 4 and 5) have the deepest undercut cavity with the thinnest faces for more ballspeed, and tungsten weights plugged into the toe for greater forgiveness. Shorter irons have no undercut cavity, thicker faces and no tungsten weights for greater workability. Compared with the Titleist AP1 712 irons, the 714 AP1s have a more blunted leading edge and more camber in the sole to help improve turf interaction, and they're one degree stronger (the pitching wedge has 44 degrees of loft). The feel is moderated by the medallion in the back of the cavity and this gives a very solid feel to all the irons, belying the fact that this is an oversize, cast cavity back head. They have also increased the camber of the sole in the short irons to help the ball through the turf and to prevent the club digging into the ground. This is does very well and all through the set the divots were very similar and it all helped to enhance the feel of the clubs. The AP1 714 irons come with a True Temper XP95 steel shaft that is 15 grams lighter than the previous Dynamic Golf XP or a Mitsubishi Kuro Kage 65 graphite shaft. These cheap golf clubs are both lightweight shafts and help to give an overall feeling of lightness to the set. McGinley said the goal of the new 714 AP1 irons was to improve the ball flight while increasing forgiveness and feel. But one thing Titleist didn't want to do was make the clubs bigger.
