EMR or electronic medical records are often confused with an EHR, or electronic health record. The electronic medical record remains within the physician's office, while the electronic health record travels with the patient. Electronic medical records are primarily an information or tracking device. Once the patient comes into the office, their information follows them throughout the visit. What makes it easy for the practitioner is that the tracking portion of the medical records advises if the patient is up to date with shots or lab work and even medication. There is one major drawback to the electronic medical record and that is the record cannot be sent to another practitioner. as easily as with an EHR. Generally in order for a record to be sent to another physician, the electronic medical record will have to be printed out and mailed to the other physician. There are several different types of EMR available. The software can be adjusted for a cardiology practice, an Orthopedic practice or even a pediatric practice. The size of the office doesn't matter as well. The most common type of technology that one will see in your physician's office is the asp technology. This is used by the nurse or doctor with a laptop. Patient information can be scanned in as in a hospital or it can be typed in. Backup of the records are done through the vendor. The terms EMR and EHR are now becoming more interchangeable as the products have become more interactive. The 2 products are becoming more and more alike. There is even a software product now available that will send the electronic medical record to another location.
